Opened Netflix rental envelope containing a DVD copy of Coach Carter (2005)ĭVD players were a popular gift for holiday sales in late 2001, and demand for DVD subscription services were "growing like crazy", according to chief talent officer Patty McCord. John Antioco, CEO of Blockbuster, thought the offer was a joke and declined, saying, "The dot-com hysteria is completely overblown." While Netflix experienced fast growth in early 2001, the continued effects of the dot-com bubble collapse and the September 11 attacks caused the company to hold off plans for its initial public offering (IPO) and to lay off one-third of its 120 employees. In September 2000, during the dot-com bubble, while Netflix was suffering losses, Hastings and Randolph offered to sell the company to Blockbuster for $50 million. The per-rental model was dropped by early 2000, allowing the company to focus on the business model of flat-fee unlimited rentals without due dates, late fees, shipping and handling fees, or per-title rental fees. ![]() Initially, Netflix offered a per-rental model for each DVD but introduced a monthly subscription concept in September 1999. Fearing competition from Amazon, Randolph at first thought the offer was fair, but Hastings, who owned 70% of the company, turned it down on the plane ride home. Randolph and Hastings met with Jeff Bezos, where Amazon offered to acquire Netflix for between $14 and $16 million. Netflix launched as the first DVD rental and sales website with 30 employees and 925 titles available-nearly all DVDs published. Hastings invested $2.5 million into Netflix from the sale of Pure Atria. Hastings is often quoted saying that he decided to start Netflix after being fined $40 at a Blockbuster store for being late to return a copy of Apollo 13, a claim since repudiated by Randolph. When the disc arrived intact, they decided to enter the $16 billion Home-video sales and rental industry. When they heard about DVDs, first introduced in the United States in early 1997, they tested the concept of selling or renting DVDs by mail by mailing a compact disc to Hastings's house in Santa Cruz. Hastings and Randolph considered and rejected selling and renting VHS as too expensive to stock and too delicate to ship. Randolph admired Amazon and wanted to find a large category of portable items to sell over the Internet using a similar model. Patty McCord, later head of Human Resources at Netflix, was also in the carpool group. Hastings and Randolph came up with the idea for Netflix while carpooling between their homes in Santa Cruz, California, and Pure Atria's headquarters in Sunnyvale. He was previously a co-founder of MicroWarehouse, a computer mail-order company as well as vice president of marketing for Borland. Randolph had worked as a marketing director for Pure Software after Pure Atria acquired a company where Randolph worked. Hastings, a computer scientist and mathematician, was a cofounder of Pure Software, which was acquired by Rational Software that year for $750 million, the then biggest acquisition in Silicon Valley history. ![]() Netflix was founded by Marc Randolph and Reed Hastings on August 29, 1997, in Scotts Valley, California. So much so that it’s sometimes known as “Mooncake Festival.” However, it’s celebrated all over Asia, where it’s known as tsukimi (Moon-viewing) in Japan and as chuseaok in Korea. Held on the 15th day of the eighth month of the Chinese calendar, Mid-Autumn Festival involves lanterns, moon-gazing and the eating of pastries called mooncakes. There was a New Moon on Thursday, February 11, 2021, which explains why New Year is being celebrated the following day, but more important is the length of a “lunar year.” A lunar year is a cycle of 12 orbits of the Moon around the Earth, with each taking 29 days and, in total, 354 days long. Twelve participants with moderate-to-severe hemiparetic stroke and six without stroke performed maximal isometric torque generation in eight directions: shoulder abduction/adduction and elbow, wrist, and finger flexion/extension. If upregulation of brainstem motor pathways occurs following stroke-induced corticofugal tract damage, then we would expect a pattern of muscle dependency in the observed behaviors consistent with such neural reorganization. Here we formally investigated these observations and interpreted them within the context of the neural mechanisms thought to underlie stereotypical movement patterns. distal muscles and associated reactions in the paretic limb occurred during maximal efforts with the non-paretic limb, the strength of which seemed to vary depending on which muscles in the non-paretic limb were contracting. ![]() It seemed that: paretic wrist/finger muscles were activated maximally during contractions of muscles at a different joint differences in the magnitude of synergy expression occurred when elicited via contraction of proximal vs. During our recent work on differences in synergy expression among proximal and distal joints, we serendipitously observed some notable characteristics of synergy-driven muscle activation. Accumulating evidence indicates that these synergies emerge because of upregulation of diffusely projecting brainstem motor pathways following stroke-induced damage to corticofugal pathways. Results provide indirect evidence linking the influence of brainstem motor pathways to abnormal motor behaviors post-stroke, and they demonstrate the need to examine whole-limb behavior when studying or seeking to rehabilitate the paretic upper limb.Ībstract = "Individuals with moderate-to-severe post-stroke hemiparesis cannot control proximal and distal joints of the arm independently because they are constrained to stereotypical movement patterns called flexion and extension synergies. Associated reactions in the wrist/finger flexors were stronger than those of other paretic muscles and were the only ones whose response depended on whether the non-paretic contraction was at a proximal or distal joint. Synergy-driven contractions were strongest when elicited via proximal joints and weakest when elicited via distal joints. For some participants, joint torque and muscle activation generated during maximal voluntary contractions were lower than during maximal synergy-induced contractions (i.e., contractions about a different joint), particularly for wrist and fingers. ![]() Individuals with moderate-to-severe post-stroke hemiparesis cannot control proximal and distal joints of the arm independently because they are constrained to stereotypical movement patterns called flexion and extension synergies. ![]() ![]() ![]() Show up en masse to your city centers and if nearby capitol buildings and demand a rejection to the two-party death strangle the Democrats, Republicans, and their financial backers would press upon us.Īll out for a General Strike, January 20! It’s the kind of energy and enthusiasm that can ripple beyond unions, per Margaret Poydock, a policy analyst at the Economic Policy Institute. And this brings energy and enthusiasm,” Clark said. “So what you see in the labor movement today is an influx of young workers, much more diversity. He added that union support is strongest among Gen Z, who are up to 26 years old. “Which is the highest it’s been in decades,” said Paul Clark, a professor of labor and employment relations at Penn State. While union membership rates have been steadily declining, a Gallup poll from last year put Americans’ approval of labor unions at more than 70%. Meanwhile, public support can bolster worker confidence to move forward with a strike. “I think a lot of people came out of the pandemic feeling like they didn’t necessarily want to take the usual guff,” Holzer said. Plus, many people are rethinking the role of work in their lives. COVID made a lot of essential workers feel unappreciated and made a lot of workers in general feel burnt out. That was certainly the case when businesses reopened during the pandemic - and it’s still mostly the case now that the federal public health emergency declaration has ended.Īnd the pandemic motivated strikes, said Holzer. The ebbs and flows of worker power generally move with the ebbs and flows of the economy. UPS workers and United Airlines pilots have voted to authorize strikes.
